Olympians Centrowitz, Martinez Highlight USATF Distance Classic


LOS ANGELES -- Rio Olympic gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz and Olympian Brenda Martinez headline the fields set for Thursday at the 2018 USATF Distance Classic at Jack Kemp Stadium on the campus of Occidental College.

Centrowitz, the first American to win a 1500m Olympic gold medal since 1908, is currently slated to run both the 800m and 1500m. In the quarter-mile race, Boris Berian, a 2016 Olympian and 2017 World Indoor Champion, will toe the line with Rio Olympian Charles Jock and 2018 IAAF World Indoors team member Craig Engles.


In the women’s 800m, Rio Olympian and 2013 World Championships silver medalist Brenda Martinez will be challenged by Laura Roesler, a fourth-place finisher at the 2016 World Indoor Championships.


The men’s 1500m will feature, in addition to Centrowitz, 2012 Olympic silver medalist and two-time USATF Outdoor Champion Leo Manzano; 2017 USATF 10,000m Champion Hassan Mead; 2016 Rio Paralympic 1500m gold medalist Mikey Brannigan; 2017 USATF Championships third-place finisher in the 1500m John Gregorek; and Kyle Merber a world record holder in the Distance Medley Relay and the 4x800m relay.
