Deena Kastor sets four Masters world records at Philly Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania -- Olympic bronze medalist Deena Kastor (Mammoth Lakes, California) set four Masters world records Sunday morning at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon, finishing third overall in 1:09:36.

En route to her half marathon Masters world record, Kastor also set three additional Masters world records at 15K (49:03), 10 miles (52:41) and 20K (1:05:52). She also crushed her own American Masters half-marathon record of 1:11:38. Her performance bested the previous record, set by Russia’s Irina Permitina in 2008, by 20 seconds.

Course Records Fall at USA 50K Championships

BEND, Oregon -- It was a fast day at the USA 50K Trail Championships, held Sunday at Bend's Flagline 50K. A cloudless sky with temperatures in the 50s would bode well for the athletes to set off at a fast pace and as a result, both the men’s and women’s course records were broken.

For the women, first-timer at the distance, Megan Roche (Mountain View, California), led from the start and, in a competitive field, finished eighth overall in a time of four hours, 40 seconds, smashing the 2012 record of 4:11:28 set by Erica Baron.

In second for the women was Olympian Magdalena Boulet (Oakland, California), who was also under the course record finishing in 4:10:49. Her performance was good enough for tenth overall and first in the masters’ division. Rounding out the top three for the women was Amanda Brown (West Linn, Oregon), who finished in 4:33:56.

The men’s race saw Tim Tollefson (Mammoth Lakes, California), in his debut trail race break away from the field some six miles into the race and finish with a course-record performance of 3:24:04.

Hot on his heels was runner-up Ryan Bak (Bend, Oregon), who chewed up a deficit which grew to more than three minutes to finish just 20 seconds after Tollefson. Bak’s time of 3:24:24 was also under the course record of 3:27:54 set by Max King in 2011.

David Laney (Ashland, Oregon) finished third in 3:31:20. Top master was flatlander Brad Burgman (Des Moines, Iowa), who finished in eighth place among the men with a time of 4:13:42.
