Wilkins named throws coach at Olympic Training Center
National Track & Field Hall of Fame member and 1976 Olympic discus gold medalist Mac Wilkens has been named throws coach at the USATF High Performance Training Center at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Wilkens takes the position immediately following eight years spent as an assistant coach with Concordia University and director of the Concordia University Throwing Center in Portland, Ore. During his tenure at Concordia, Wilkens coached a total of 87 athletes to NAIA All-American honors and 24 national titles.
As an athlete, Wilkens also won silver at the 1984 Olympic Games and set the world record in the discus four times.
Yoder Begley named head women’s cross country coach at Connecticut
Amy Yoder Begley, a 2008 Team USA Olympian and 2009 World Outdoor Championships 10,000m finalist, has been named the women’s cross country coach and assistant women’s track and field coach at the University of Connecticut. In addition to work on the cross country team, Yoder Begley will coach distance and middle-distance runners in track and field.
Yoder Begley has won three combined USA Indoor and Outdoor titles in the 3,000m and 10,000m along with the 2001 NCAA Outdoor title competing for the University of Arkansas. She was also a 15-time NCAA Division I All-American.
Williams third at U.S. National Push Championships
In her first attempt at the women’s bobsled, 2004 Olympic 100m silver medalist Lauryn Williams placed third last week at the U.S. National Push Championships in Calgary, Canada.
In her second year in the sport, American indoor 60m hurdles record holder and two-time Olympian Lolo Jones placed fifth.
Williams, who also won gold at the 2004 Olympic Games as part of the 4x100m relay, retired from track and field earlier this year.
Team USA sweeps team competition at USA vs. Canada Race Walk Match
Molly Josephs and Nathaniel Roberts each led the way for the women’s and men’s Team USA squads, respectively, in a sweep over Canada Sunday at the 25th USA vs. Canada Junior Race Walk Match.
Josephs finished the 5-kilometer (km) race in a time of 26:24 to finish ahead of Brenda Jo McCollum (26:47) and Monika Farmer (27:50), who placed second and fourth overall, to help the women’s junior squad to a 12-10 win over Canada. In each junior race, the top three scores counted toward the team total.
On the men’s side, Roberts finished the 10 km race in a time of 47:43 to finish ahead of Alexander Peters (51:42) and Anthony Peters (51:42), who placed third and fourth, to help the Team USA men to a 12-9 win over Canada.
