USATF announces agreement with SPIRE Institute
USA Track & Field athletes will benefit from a new agreement between USATF and the SPIRE Institute, located in Geneva, Ohio. The U.S. Olympic Committee recently designated the SPIRE Institute as a designated Olympic and Paralympic training site.

The SPIRE Institute features a world-class training and competition environment with indoor and outdoor track & field facilities, sports medicine and strength training facilities. The facility boasts more than 750,00 square feet of indoor training facilities on a grounds of more than 175 acres.

Athletes will be able to use the facilities as a full-time residential training center, as a short-term use facility and for athletes living in the area to use as a training facility. The SPIRE facilities may also be used as a site for USATF Coaching Education programs, various camps, clinics and sport-related events.

Yates, Moat win USA 50 Mile Trail Championships
Michele Yates and Cody Moat took top honors at the USA 50 Mile Trail Championships hosted by the Neuces Endurance 50 Mile Trail Run in Rocksprings, Texas, on March 2.

The course consists of three 16.67 mile loops over hilly and rocky terrain on singletrack trails and dirt paths.

Yates got off to an early lead as she separated herself from the rest of the women’s field in the first lap of the race. She continued to build a sizeable lead over the women and crossed the finish line first in 6:53.25 to break her own course record by 32 minutes. This is Yates’ second consecutive national title with her recent 100 km win two months ago and third national title overall. She was also the defending 50 Mile champion from a year ago. Melanie Fryar finished as the runner-up in 7:33.58, with Pam Smith third in 7:39.19.

On the men’s side Paul Terranova took the lead at the gun with Jason Bryant and Cody Moat leading the chase pack. Over the final loop of the course Moat closed the gap on Terranova and moved into the lead. Moat finished in a course record time of 6:26.03 to claim his second consecutive national title following the USA Trail Marathon title from the fall. Terranova finished second in 6:32.10 with Bryant third in 6:46.09

Gray, Istnick Defend 50 km Road Titles
Joe Gray (Renton, Wash.) and Shanna Ailes Istnick (Kent, Ohio) won the USA 50 km Road Championships hosted for the eighth year by the Caumsett Park 50 km in Caumsett, N.Y., on March 3.
Gray finished in 2:55:19 to repeat as champion.

“The competition was good, but wish they’d have been a little closer, to push me to break the record,” Gray said.

Istnick led the women’s field from start to finish in a time of 3:33:04, which was good enough for sixth overall to win her second consecutive national 50 km title.

Boyd Carrington, 40, of Amityville, N.Y. and Tina-Marie Poulin, 40, of New York, N.Y. were the top Masters finishers in 3:28:44 and 3:56:57, respectively.
