Newhouse presented with Heliodoro and Patricia Rico Lifetime Achievement Award

COLUMBUS — Fred Newhouse, who has had prominent roles in the sport of track & field as an athlete, administrator, official and volunteer, is the 2017 Heliodoro and Patricia Rico Lifetime Achievement Award winner, USATF announced Thursday.

 

The Heliodoro and Patricia Rico Lifetime Achievement Award acknowledges people with the drive and vision to reach the highest plateau of our sport through their chosen area of involvement.

 

The 1976 Olympic silver medalist in the 400m and gold medalist in the 4x400 relay, Newhouse has a long, storied volunteer career, serving on the USOC and USATF Boards of Directors. In 2000, Newhouse was appointed Team Leader for the United States Men’s Track and Field squad to the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He was treasurer on the USATF Board of Directors and served as chair of the budget committee. In 2014, he received USATF’s Roy Griak Distinguished Service Award, and was a 1983 USATF President’s Award honoree. He continues to serve as the Referee for the Texas Relays and the Texas State UIL Track and Field Championships. He currently serves on USATF’s men’s track & field executive committee.

 

Newhouse is past Chairman of the Board of the Texas City/La Marque Chamber of Commerce, Chair-elect for the Houston East End Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Houston’s Community Family Center, and Vice-chair of the Black Heritage Committee – Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He also serves on the Capital Campaign Committee for Prairie View A&M University and is an avid supporter of the United Way and Boy Scouts of America.

 

Newhouse has committed his life to the sport, competing in college at Prairie View A&M University in Texas and the University of Washington in Seattle, earning degrees in Electrical Engineering and a Masters of International Business, respectively. He was a three-time NAIA All-American and national champion at Prairie View. Between undergraduate and graduate school, he served two years in the United States Army.

 

Newhouse and his wife, Rhonda, have two daughters, Vonda (Pele’ Nunley) and Benecia, and two grandsons, Andre’ and Bryce.
