Neil Howard III’s multi-event success earns USATF Athlete of the Week honors

7/5/2018

Neil Howard III (Hudson, New York/Club In a New York Minute) won every event of the Boys’ 11-12 Pentathlon and the open high jump at the USATF Youth Outdoor Championships.

Twelve-year-old Howard stacked up 2,364 points across five events to beat the rest of the field by 999 points. Stand out performances from the pentathlon include his 13.86 finish in the 80m hurdles and 4.37m/14-4 long jump. After claiming his pentathlon title, Howard went on to win the Boys’ 11-12 high jump as he cleared 1.50m/4-11.

Other notable performances from the week:

Ronnie Baker --  Baker battled an elite field with the top four athletes running sub-10 times to pick up his third diamond league win in the men’s 100m. His personal best performance in Paris was able to tie Noah Lyles’ world lead time of 9.88. Baker held the world lead briefly earlier this year when he ran a 9.93 at Rome’s Golden Gala.

Sam Kendricks -- Olympic bronze medalist Sam Kendricks took over the pole vault world lead at Diamond League Paris with a 5.96m/19-6.5 vault. This is the third diamond league win of 2018 for the reigning world champion.

Michael Norman – 20-year-old Michael Norman clocked a personal best time of 19.84 in the men’s 200m at Diamond League Paris. His first sub-20 performance bested the field and moved him to fourth in the world this year. Norman also leads the world in the men’s 400m and holds the indoor 400m world record.

George Roudebush -- 93-year-old George Roudebush competed in a decathlon at the USATF Masters Outdoor Combined Events Championships. He tallied 1,816 points as he completed seven of the ten events. Some of Roudebush’s notable performances from the event include his 4.85m/15-11 toss in the shot put and 0.91m/2-11.75 clearance in the high jump.

Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
