Molly Huddle’s American record earns her USATF Athlete of the Week


Molly Huddle (Elmira, New York) set an American record at the Aramco Houston Half Marathon Sunday to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Huddle crossed the line in 67:25 to take nine seconds off the previous record, set in 2006 at Berlin by Deena Kastor. Huddle also set American records for 10 miles and 20km en route to a seventh-place finish. It was the first race on U.S. soil to feature four women finishing under 67:00.

Other notable performances:

Leonard Korir — Korir defended his title at the Great Edinburgh XCountry International Challenge, kicking past Turkey’s Kaan Ozbilen to finish the 8km course in 24:32.

Bernard Lagat — Lagat broke the American masters record for the half marathon with his 62:00 at Houston, knocking 1:02 off the record he shared with Meb Keflezighi.

Sandi Morris — Morris cleared 4.90m/16-0.75 at the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, a height achieved by only two other American women in history.

Kelsey Chmiel — Chmiel, a junior at Saratoga Springs High School in New York, won the junior women’s 4km race at the Great Edinburgh XCountry International Challenge in 14:10.

Trey Culver — Texas Tech’s defending NCAA indoor high jump champion, Culver set a lifetime best at his school’s brand new facility with a 2.33m/7-7.75 leap that equaled the fourth-best indoor jump in collegiate history.

Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
