Migliozzi wins IAU 50K en route to USATF Athlete of the Week

11/17/2016

INDIANAPOLIS -- Tony Migliozzi (North Canton, Ohio) won his second International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 50 km world title Saturday, earning him USATF Athlete of the Week honors.

Migliozzi teamed up with compatriot Tyler Andrews to go 1-2 in Doha, with Migliozzi finishing in 2:54:02 to lead the Team USA men to team gold. The 2016 champion defended his world title from 2015, improving upon the U.S. men's team finish when the Americans took home silver. The championship is in its second

Earlier last month, Migliozzi was the fifth-fastest American man at the 2016 Chicago Marathon, finishing in 2:19:39. He also won the Akron Marathon and set a course record in September in 2:21:40.

Other notable performances this week:

  • Devin Clark (Spring Branch, Texas), who set an AJR in the 3000SC in the spring, won the NCAA DI South Central region in 20:17.4 and the Arkansas women also took top honors.
  • Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Michigan) cruised to her fourth win in a row — this time at the NCAA DI Great Lakes Region Championships — and helped No. 5 Michigan win the team title. The senior crossed the finish line in 19:27.8, nearly eight seconds ahead of runner-up Anna Rohrer of Notre Dame.
  • Erin Taylor-Talcott (Owego, New York) became the first woman to win a nation's 50 km race walk national title, winning the New Zealand 50K walking title in 4:42:15. Taylor-Talcott, less than a year removed from competing in the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships as the only woman in the 50K field, bested the competition by 13 minutes.
  • Futsum Zienasellassie (Indianapolis, Indiana) won the NCAA DI Mountain Region individual title in 30:54.10, leading the top-ranked Northern Arizona men to the team title.

Now in its 15th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
