INDIANAPOLIS - Matt Flaherty
has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week placing first at the USA 50 Mile Road Championships.
(Bloomington, Ind.) set a course-record 5:28:11 to win the men’s title at the Tussey Mountainback 50 Miler which played host to the USA 50 Mile Road Championships in Boalsburg, Pa.
According to local media reports, Flaherty took the early lead around mile 5 and held on from there. His father crewed the race for him and was able to drive ahead to each aid station to provide nutrition, as well as updates on where his competitors were behind him.
“I opened up a nice cushion,” Flaherty said. “It saved me at the end when it got tough.”
Flaherty’s teammate Cassie Scallon
(Boulder, Colo.) won the women’s title, finishing third overall in a personal best time of 6:24:01.
Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
