Maria Michta sets American 25K record at USATF 30 km Race Walk Championships

COTTAGE, New York -- With perfect conditions at Rockland Lake State Park for USATF 30 km Race Walk Championships, one athlete set an American record and another earned redemption with the 2014 title.
Maria Michta (Long Island, New York) headlined a strong women’s field that also included two-time Olympian Teresa Vaill (Gainesville, Florida) and Susan Randall (Beavercreek, Ohio), a 2013 age group Masters Race Walker of the Year.
Michta was crowned champion after her 30 km finish of 2:34:42 helped set a new American record of 2:07:46 in the 25 km en route to her fourth AR of 2014. Michta set the 20 km record in April before bettering that mark at the Race Walk World Cup in Taicang, China, in May. Randall finished second at 30 km Champs with her time of 2:38:51, and Debbie Topham (Mayville, Michigan) of Pegasus A.C. crossed in 3:28:09 for third. Vaille competed well but registered only for the 20 km distance.
In the men’s race, Dave Talcott (Oswego, New York) took the men’s overall and the M50 age group titles with his finish of 2:37:52, a 37-second improvement on his runner-up performance last year.
Earning the top, team award was Shore A.C., featuring Talcott, Bill Vayo (White Plains, New York) and Tom Quattrochii, who combined for a time of 9:35.05. Pegasus A.C. athletes Dan O’Brien (Port Huron, Michigan), Leon Jasionowski (East China, Michigan) and Tom Bedford, Jr. were second, combining for 10:37:56.
