American indoor and outdoor record holder Chaunte Lowe cleared a height of 1.97m/6-5.5 on her first attempt in the women’s high jump to claim first place honors Thursday at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway. The Bislett Games were the fifth stop for the Samsung Diamond League.
Lowe cruised through the first six heights by clearing five of them on her first attempt. The lone jumper remaining in the competition, she failed to clear the bar at 1.99m/6-6.25. The reigning World Indoor champion and indoor Visa Championship Series winner, Lowe picked up her second Diamond League win this season after also grabbing the victory in Shanghai. Lowe currently owns the second best jump in the world at 2.0m/6-6.75.
Americans also grabbed a pair of second place finishes in Oslo that included Christian Taylor in the triple jump and Kristie Castlin in the 100-meter hurdles.
Taylor, the reigning World Indoor champion in the event and winner at last week’s Prefontaine Classic, recorded a distance of 17.06m/55-11.75 while Castlin ran a personal best time of 12.56, which is the second-fastest time in the U.S. this season.
American athletes also picked up third place finishes in four events. That list included: Justin Gaymon (season best time of 48.97 in the 400m hurdles), Debbie Dunn (season best time of 51.22 in the 400m), Charonda Williams (a time of 22.75 in the 200m) and Janay DeLoach (distance of 6.78m/22-3 in the long jump).
Other notable American athletes in Diamond League competition in Oslo: Morgan Uceny (sixth in the 1,500m in a time of 4:05.30); Tiffany Townsend (sixth in the 100m in a time of 11.56); Lolo Jones (fifth in the 100m hurdles in a time of 12.75) and Danielle Carruthers (sixth in the 100m hurdles in a time of 12.76).
The Diamond League will continue Saturday at the adidas Grand Prix on Randall’s Island in New York City. The adidas Grand Prix is also the next stop for the Visa Championship Series and will be broadcast live on NBC from 3-4:30 p.m. (Eastern).
