Longtime USATF Board Member Sam Germany passes away at age 73


INDIANAPOLIS -- Beloved official, coach and USATF contributor Sam Germany passed away Saturday at the age of 73.

Active with USATF since 1979, Germany was an assistant coach of the 1995 Olympic Festival for the West, a member of USATF’s Youth executive committee, a current member of USATF’s board of directors and an Olympic official. He was the co-founder of the USATF Nevada Association and its vice president.

Germany’s athletic career began as a champion high school and collegiate football player. In 1975, he earned his MBA in educational administration from UNLV and established one of the first USATF clubs in Clark County, Nevada.

Serving as an assistant AD at UNLV, he was the head recruiting coordinator and assistant track and field coach from 1985-1992.

He founded the Pegasus Track Club in Las Vegas and served as an assistant coach for the Gazelles Track Club in Las Vegas, coaching under four-time NFL All-Pro quarterback Randall Cunningham.

Germany was an assistant coach at Canyon Springs High School in North Las Vegas and has served on three USATF Team staffs: 1997 World University Games head manager, 2001 Pan Am Juniors women’s coach and 2008 Bank of Scotland Championships coach.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, one son, and several grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on December 28 at Remnant Ministries in Las Vegas.
