Lomong claims the Sir Walter Miler title and record to earn USATF Athlete of the Week


Lopez Lomong (Lake Oswego, Oregon) won the Sir Walter Miler elite mile race in Raleigh, North Carolina, finishing the four-lap race in 3.53:86.

The 33-year-old Bowerman Track Club athlete ran his fastest mile in five years while also setting a new meet record. His time was .01 seconds from beating the record for the fastest mile ever recorded in the state of North Carolina. His mark is currently the seventh fastest time in the world this year.


Other notable performances:

Casey Gilliam: Top finisher at the Quadruple Bypass 4K Uphill Challenge in Litchfield, Illinois on August 4. Gilliam, who was classified in the 35-39 age group, bested the entire female field with a time of 18.20:92 and beat the runner-up by almost half a minute.

Molly Huddle: Ran a time of 31:40 at the Beach to Beacon 10K on August 4; coming in behind only two foreign competitors, she was the top American competitor of the event and her time was good for a third place finish.

Charlene Lipsey: Won the women’s elite mile race at the Sir Walter Miler in Raleigh, North Carolina on August 3. She crossed the finish line in a time of 4:27.28, narrowly taking first place by a 0.03 second margin after a tooth-and-nail finish.

Jorge Maravilla: Won his second straight title at the San Francisco Marathon on August 5; Maravilla, a 40-year-old who holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and El Salvador, stopped to grab his son before crossing the finish in 2.27:56 to win the race.


Ben True: Top American finisher in the Beach to Beacon 10K on August 4; True, the event’s 2016 champion out of Maine, clocked 28:29 to place third overall behind two foreign competitors.
