Loaded fields in men's hurdles, shot put in Shanghai

5/18/2012

The event fields in the men’s 110-meter hurdles and men’s shot put will each feature five of America’s best as the Samsung Diamond League makes its second stop of the 2012 outdoor season Saturday in Shanghai.

Americans David Oliver, Jason Richardson, Aries Merritt, Dexter Faulk and Kevin Craddock help to create a loaded field in the men’s 110m hurdles that also includes 2004 Olympic gold medalist Liu Xiang of China, who will be competing in his hometown.

Merritt, who is fresh off his gold medal in the 60m hurdles at the World Indoor Championships, currently owns the fastest time in the world this year at 13.03 just ahead of Liu (13.09) and American record holder Oliver (13.17). Richardson, the 2011 World Outdoor champion, holds a season best of 13.30.

The men’s shot put will feature four American men who were all ranked in the top eight in the world in 2011 according to Track & Field News. Reese Hoffa, Christian Cantwell, Adam Nelson and Ryan Whiting, who also hold the top four throws in the world this year, respectively, and Cory Martin are all entered to compete.

The women’s 200m will feature 2011 Jesse Owens Award winner and current world-leader Carmelita Jeter. She was the Diamond League champion in both the 100m and 200m in 2011.

The men’s triple jump features a trio of Americans in 2011 World Outdoor champion Christian Taylor, 2012 World Indoor gold medalist Will Claye and 2008 Olympic Trials champion Aarik Wilson.

Other athletes to watch include: Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Brown-Trafton in the discus, American indoor and outdoor record holder Chaunte Lowe in the high jump and 2005 World  champion Bershawn Jackson in the 400m hurdles.

The Samsung Diamond League includes 32 individual event disciplines with a points scoring ‘Diamond Race’ which runs throughout the 14-meet series. Winners of each Diamond Race will receive a diamond trophy and a cash prize.

The meet will be webcast live by Universal Sports Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. For webcast information visit: http://universalsports.com/category/track-field/. For updates on the Shanghai Diamond League meet continue to check www.diamondleague.com and  www.usatf.org.
