Leonard Korir’s speedy half marathon earns him USATF Athlete of the Week


Leonard Korir (Colorado Springs, Colorado) ran the second-fastest time ever by an American man to finish third at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and earn USATF Athlete of the Week for the second time this year.


Korir overcame difficult air quality conditions to clock 59:52, nine seconds off the American record of 59:43 set by Ryan Hall in 2007. The winner of the USATF Half Marathon title in April, Korir clipped 1:14 off his lifetime best and became only the second U.S. man ever to dip under 60 minutes for the distance. Other notable performances:

  • Kevin Castille — Castille set a 45-49 age group world best in the 10K at the Rockin’ Rib 10K in Davie, Florida, with a 29:51.

  • Katelyn Tuohy — Tuohy, a sophomore at North Rockland HS, won the New York state cross country meet by 40 seconds, breaking the course record by 18 seconds to finish the 5K in 16:52.

  • Khia Kurtenbach — The University of Chicago junior won the NCAA Division III individual cross country title by more than six seconds, covering 6K in 20:39.2.

Now in its 16th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
