Leadership Mentoring at USA Outdoor Championships

4/29/2013

Members,

The Committee on Diversity and Leadership has partnered with Men's and Women's Track & Field to sponsor a mentoring opportunity for two individuals at the 2013 Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. This year's Championships will be used to select our national team athletes who will compete in the IAAF Outdoor World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

We will select two individuals to shadow members of the Championship Competition Committee in order to gain a better understanding of how a championship meet is conducted. For example, the individuals selected may be provided a behind-the-scenes look at the entry and entry-appeals process; the protest resolution process during the competition; deployment of meet officials; warm-up and call-room procedures; management of TV and other media demands; and the team selection process for the Moscow World Championship team. Mentors will furnish a daily checklist to their mentees designed to focus critical thinking in each of the above areas. Participants will also have frequent opportunities to assist in and complete assigned tasks during the meet.

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the sport and to the organization, with preference given to individuals who are active at the Association level, either as an athlete, coach, or official. Experience as an official is regarded as a plus but is not required. At the conclusion of the program, the individuals will be required to furnish written feedback about their experience, such as what they learned, any suggestions for possible improvement, and how they could take what they have learned and apply it to their association championships.

Here's what we will provide:

  • An Air travel subsidy not to exceed $500.00, to Des Moines
  • Hotel accommodations for three (3) nights during the Championships
  • Event Management Credentials

If you are highly motivated and energetic and would like to be considered for this mentoring opportunity, please submit a brief resume outlining your involvement in USATF activities as an athlete, coach or official, to Chair@diversity.usatf.org. The deadline is Monday, May 6, 2013.
