Kynard jumped 2.34m/7-8 narrowly edging out the second and third-place finishers who both jumped 2.31m/7-7. The 2012 Olympic Silver Medalists’ performance tied his personal record.

“It was good day. I was able to jump all the way through to 2.34 without a miss.” Kynard said. “The entire day was well put together. I was very clean. I didn’t feel anything special going into the meet. It’s only my second meet of the year, so it’s still early.”

The Wildcats senior set this year’s world leading mark in his second outdoor competition early in the track and field season. The marked equaled the Mt. SAC Relays and the Hilmer Lodge Stadium record in the high jump set by world champion Jesse Williams in 2011.

“I’m in impeccable shape, right now. That is why I was able to jump at such a high level this early in the season compared to late last season,” Kynard said. "Right now, I’m in great physical and mental shape and that is a testament to my coaches preparing me.”

Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
