Kevin Castille dominates at USATF Club XC to capture USATF Athlete of the Week


INDIANAPOLIS -- Kevin Castille (Lafayette, Louisiana) earns the second USATF Athlete of the Week honor of his career, following a dominant performance at the 2016 USATF Club Cross Country Championships on Saturday, December 10.


Castille prevailed in the masters men’s 10 km race in Tallahassee, putting 11 seconds between himself and the field just 1 km into the race. Castille continued to push the pace, expanding his lead to nearly 60 seconds with 2 km remaining. The master of the roads crossed the cross country finish in impressive fashion, best the field by 1:14 to win in 31:29.


Castille defended his individual USATF Club Cross Country Championships title from 2015, another masterful performance that saw him beat the field by over 30 seconds to earn USATF Athlete of the Week accolades.


Other notable performances:

  • Brian Barraza (El Paso, Texas) of Houston won the men’s mile at the Texas A&M Reveille Invitational in 3:58.66, becoming the first person to ever run an indoor sub-4 mile in the month of December.
  • Sam Chelanga (Tucson, Arizona) led his American Distance Project team to victory, winning the individual men’s title at the USATF Club Cross Country Championships in 28:55.
  • Jazmine Fray (Long Island, New York) of Texas A&M became the equal-10th-fastest U.S. collegian ever in the women’s 1000m at the Reveille Invitational with her 2:43.15.
  • Sonja Friend-Uhl (Boca Raton, Florida) easily defended her individual masters women’s title at the USATF Club Cross Country Championships, surging over the final loop to put 22 seconds between her and the field to win in 22:15.
  • Yamilet Lopez (Fontana, California) easily dominated the girls’ 8 and under race at JOXC, completing the 2K course 40 seconds ahead of second place in 7:44.56.
  • Colleen Quigley (St. Louis, Missouri) won the individual women’s title at the USATF Club Cross Country Championships with a bit of a home course advantage, returning to the course she competed on as a nine-time All-American at Florida State University. Quigley came through the line in 19:31 to aid her Bowerman Track Club teammates to bronze in the women’s team race, scoring 99 points.
  • Sha’Keela Saunders (Norfolk, Virginia) of Kentucky won the women’s long jump at the Hoosier Open in Bloomington with a leap of 6.73m/22-1.

Now in its 15th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week. This is the last week of honors for 2016.
