INDIANAPOLIS - U.S. Army Captain Kelly Calway has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after finishing as the first woman at the Marine Corps Marathon.
Calway, a Military Intelligence officer, will soon deploy to Kuwait with an infantry battalion.
Calway’s performance marked her first win at 26.2 miles, crossing the line in 2:42:16. One week earlier, Calway (Manitou Springs, Colo.) won the Army 10-miler. She typically runs one or two marathons a year.
“I started running when I was 8, when my family lived in Hawaii,” said Calway, who was born in Milicani, Hawaii. “I was an Army brat, I ran everywhere starting from bantams at USATF meets through college. In college (at N.C. State) I ran middle distance. My parents did marathons, so I couldn’t wait to get out of college to run one.”
Calway is part of the Army’s “World Class Athlete Program” and has been stationed at Ft. Carson, Colo., where she trained until traveling to Washington for the Army 10-miler. Running “runs” in the family as her husband, Chris (also an Army captain) and parents are all active runners. Her six-year-old daughter Hazel has also caught the running bug and is starting USATF programs this year.
“My dad always told me ‘hard work pays off,’” said Calway. “When the marathon gets tough, and I think a marathon takes guts, I repeat that to myself as the race goes along. I always rely on that mantra.”
Calway’s military intelligence position puts her at the vanguard of female soldiers and carries on a family tradition.
“My dad’s career is so inspiring and he encouraged me to try it [the Army] and I’m so glad I did because I love the Army,” said Calway. “It’s just neat to grow up in it and then be able to serve in the military, too, and have my daughter be an Army brat as well.”
Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
