8/3/2017

INDIANAPOLIS-- Following her record-breaking performance at the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Lawrence, Kansas, North Carolina superstar Kayla Davis has been awarded USATF Athlete of the Week honors.

Davis (Charlotte, North Carolina), who trains with Run U Xpress, a club coached by Olympic bronze medalist Bershawn Jackson, shattered the national record in the girls’ 13-14 400m at USATF Hershey National Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships. Davis’ time of 52.54 broke Brandi Cross’ record from 2002 and is the world’s fastest ever by a 13-year-old.

Other Notable Performances:

  • Sam Chelanga (Colorado Springs, Colorado) captured his first USARC title of the season, winning the USATF 7 Mile Championships with a time of 32:53. His victory puts him just ten points within the men’s USARC standings leader (75-65).

  • Jakobe Ford (Spokane, Washington) completed an impressive and rare triple, winning three jump events (long jump, triple jump, high jump) at Junior Olympics. Ford is the first person to ever complete the triple in 17-18 age division history dating back to 1967.

  • Lauren Gregory (Fort Collins, Colorado) captured the junior women’s bronze medal on a challenging 6.5km course with gains up to 1800 feet at the World Running Championships, finishing in 33:33.

  • Allie McLaughlin (Nashville, Tennessee) was Team USATF’s top finisher, who took home team gold at World Running Championships on Saturday. McLaughlin crossed the line at 1:06:06, finishing fifth overall on the 13 kilometer course with 3600+- feet of climbing.

  • Alexander Nunley (Garner, North Carolina) won three titles in one day at Junior Olympics. He tied a 26-year-old national and JO record in the 13-14 boys’ 100m hurdles by crossing the line in 12.94, and went on to win the 100m and 200m hurdles.

  • Lanae-Tava Thomas (Henrietta, New York) smashed the girls’ 15-16 long jump national record with the ninth-best jump overall this year. Thomas stormed down the runway and leapt 6.68m/21-11. Her jump puts her one spot behind 2016 Rio Olympian Keturah Orji on the top marks of 2017.

  • Aliphine Tuliamuk (Santa Fe, New Mexico) took the victory at the USATF 7 Mile Championships, crossing the line at 36:30 and growing her first place standing in USARC to 90 points - an impressive 36 point lead above second place.
