Kathy Martin, Bob Lida selected as World Masters Athletics Athletes of the Year

Two USATF masters athletes, W65 middle-distance ace Kathy Martin and M80 sprinter Bob Lida, have been selected as the WMA (World Masters Athletics) Athletes of the year for 2017, making this the first time two U.S. athletes have been honored in the same year. Lida previously won the prestigious award in 2012.

This year’s awards also showcased event-group winners, and two other Americans took honors; M70 thrower William Harvey and M40 combined athlete Jeferson Souza. W60 Rita Hanscom of San Diego, who also competes in the combined events, is a runner-up.

Martin, a realtor from Northport, New York, has set numerous National Age group records in events from the 800m through the 50k. She currently holds six World Age Group records; W60 1-Mile; 5:42.65, and 2000m Steeplechase; 8:37.43 and W65 1500m; 5:25.65, 3000m; 11:42.80, 5000m; 20:08.17, and 2000m Steeplechase; 8:52.49.

Lida, of Wichita, Kansas, competing for the Houston Elite masters track club, also has several U.S. Age Group records and six World marks to his credit. At last year’s Masters Indoor Championships he sprinted to a M80 Indoor 200m World Age Group record time of 29.84. His additional WMA records include M75 100m; 13.49, Indoor 200m; 27.73, 60m; 8.44, and M80 Indoor 400m; 1:10.20. Last month, running in a Masters Exhibition Event, Lida ran a crowd-pleasing sub-30 at the USATF Open Indoor Championships in Albuquerque.

Both Martin and Lida are racing March 16-18 at the upcoming Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships in Landover, Maryland.
