Jenny Simpson wins USATF Athlete of the Week


Jenny Simpson (Boulder, Colorado) ran an American best for the women’s two-miles to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Simpson, the 2011 world champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist at 1500 meters, ran away from her competition at the Drake Relays to stop the clock at 9:16.78, after passing through 3,000m at a world outdoor-leading 8:43.39 en route. The previous American best was 9:20.25 by Shannon Rowbury at Eugene in 2014, and Simpson’s time moved her to No. 9 on the all-time world list.


Other notable performances from the weekend:

Gene Dykes — Dykes set an American masters men’s 70-74 record in the road 10K, running a net 39:02 at the USATF Masters 10K Road Championships in Dedham, Mass.

Anny Stockman — Stockman smashed the women’s 85-89 record at the USATF Masters 10K Road Championships with a 1:24:50, more than 11 minutes faster than the existing record.

Taylor Ewert — Ewert broke the American junior record in the women’s 5,000m race walk with a 22:38.16 at the Penn Relays. The Ohio high schooler sliced more than 22 seconds off the existing record, set in 1994.

Maggie Ewen — The Arizona State senior set a collegiate record in the women’s shot put with her 19.46m/63-10.25 heave at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson.

Jeff Henderson — Henderson, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the long jump, soared to an outdoor world-leading 8.44m/27-8.25 at BYU’s Robison Invitational.

Sydney McLaughlin — In her season debut over 400m hurdles, Kentucky freshman McLaughlin ran a 53.60 (pending WJR) at the National Relays Championships at Arkansas.

Riley Masters — Masters won the men’s USATF 1 Mile Road Championships in Des Moines with a 4:03.1.

Emily Lipari — Lipari was the women’s winner at the USATF 1 Mile Road Championships, crossing the line in 4:32.9.
