James-Heer breaks own meet record, Puffer claims boys’ mark to open USATF Hershey Youth Indoors


STATEN ISLAND, New York -- America’s youth hit the track on the first day of the 2018 USATF Hershey National Youth Indoor Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Friday. Day one came to a close with 22 finals contested and three meet records.

Girls’ 3000 meters

Defending her 2017 national title in the 11-12 division, Clara James-Heer (Ann Arbor Track) broke her own Championship meet record set last year (10:21.74), crossing the line in 10:06.55 to claim gold and post the fastest time of the day in any girls’ age division. Ella Newman (Track Houston) won 13-14 in 12:08.48; Allison Kruger (Unattached) won 15-16 in 10:32.93 and Rachael Woodruff (Unattached) was the winner in the 17-18 age group, in 10:33.69

Boys’ 3,000m

Aidan Puffer (Central CT J) provided the headline in the boys’ 3,000m races, winning 13-14 in a meet record time of 9:11.48. After competing at 1500m last year and finishing 15th, Owen Martin (Nutmeg Striders) moved up in distance and claimed the 11-12 title with a time of 11:03.02, Sean Kay (Unattached) was the 15-16 winner in 9:25.83 and Christian Parker (Team Kentucky Elite) won 17-18 in 9:04.04

Girls’ Shot Put

With a championship meet record, Jana Alhagiko (Ocean Breeze) was the 8 & under winner with a toss of 5.17m/16-11.5, more than a meter (three feet) further than the second place finisher. Defending her 2017 national title in the 15-16 division, Chloe Lindeman (Unattached) was the 17-18 winner with throw of 13.77m/45-2.25.

Boys Shot Put

Cayden Reinert (Exeter Towns) claimed the 8 & under national title with a throw of 5.36m/17-7.

Girls High Jump

Beyona Monroe (Unattached) was the 13-14 winner with a jump of 1.55m/5-1

Boys High Jump

Allen Clarke Hilton (Hackensack J) was the 13-14 winner with a jump of 1.70m/5-7

Boys’ Long Jump

Shaun Howard II (FireStorm El) was the 9-10 winner with his fourth round leap of 4.05m/13-3.5.

4x55m Shuttle Hurdle Girls

In the 15-18 age group, the Ruff Kutz  'A' club team comprised of Phoebe Myers, Victoria McEachern, Maya Cheatham and Faith Edwards won the national title in 35.10.

4x55m Shuttle Hurdle Boys

Club team Kr2  'A' with Shakel Clarke, Justin Cepeda, Omar Rodgers and Henry Jean Michel was the 15-8 winner with a 32.42.
