Jakstiene’s record-setting weekend wins her USATF Athlete of the Week

Neringa Jakstiene (Memphis, Tennessee) broke four world masters records to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

 

Jakstiene, 55, set women’s 55-59 age group world records in the long jump (4.95m/16-3), triple jump (10.61m/34-9.75), pentathlon (4,894 pts.) and 60m hurdles (9.59) at the USATF Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in Winston-Salem. She also broke the American indoor record in the high jump during the pentathlon with a 1.48m/4-10.25 clearance.

Other notable performances from the weekend:


Irene Obera — Obera broke the world masters women’s 85-89 world records in the 400m and long jump and set American records in the 60m and 200m at the USATF Masters Indoor Championships.

Robert Hewitt — Hewitt set American masters records in the men’s 85-89 age group in the high jump and long jump at the USATF Masters Indoor Championships.

Johnny Gregorek — Gregorek ran the second-fastest indoor mile in U.S. history, clocking 3:49.98 at the Boston University Lehane Mile to narrowly miss Bernard Lagat’s AR of 3:49.89. Gregorek’s time makes him No. 6 on the world all-time indoor list.

Zach Ornelas — Ornelas won the USATF 50K Championship at Caumsett State Park in New York, finishing in 2:50:02 for a 53-second margin of victory.

Ino Cantu — Cantu set a world record in the men’s masters 85-89 mile at 7:46.94, and then set an American record the next day in the 800m.


Now in its 18th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
