Hoffa named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Reese Hoffa (Athens, Ga.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after posting three European wins in the shot put last week.

In his first competition after winning bronze at the London Olympics, Hoffa took first place at the Stockholm Diamond League meet August 17 with a throw of 21.24m/69-8.25. Hoffa beat Olympic gold medalist Tomasz Majewski of Poland and further separated himself from Majewski as the leader in the Diamond League points race.

“I set a goal of trying to win the Olympic Games and also win the Diamond League this year,” Hoffa said. “So I did not win the Olympics but that does not mean I should not try for the Diamond League title. I have worked very hard this year to be the best shot putter in the world. In order to do that I need to finish this season off strong and that is why I have been trying to throw so far now.”

Two days after Stockholm, Hoffa grabbed a second win in Warsaw with the four best throws of the day to win with a mark of 21.72m/71-3.25 and again beat Majewski. The Warsaw meet organizers also held a contest dubbed “The Longest Put of the Year” where Hoffa took top honors as he threw a 5kg shot 25.20m/82-8.25. Hoffa’s mark is an unofficial world best for the 5kg implement that is typically used only in youth and masters competitions.

“It is awesome to throw a shot put of any weight that far,” Hoffa said. “And to set an unofficial world record is greater.”

Now in its 11th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
