Hines, Staples, Moschella win big on day two Youth Indoors

NORMAL, Ill. - Drew Hines, Samantha Staples and Greg Moschella were three of the top winners from the final day of competition at the USATF National Youth Indoor Track & Field Championships in Normal, Ill.

Drew Hines (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a busy morning winning two events nearly back-to back. Hines first ran in the finals of the 55 meter sub-bantam girls race where she squeaked out a victory in 9.26, with Kristen McMillian (Birmingham, Ala.) only one hundredth of a second behind. Hines' time was a meet record by more than half a second. With only a brief break, Hines returned to the track to win the 400m finals in 1;18.72 only minutes later. In the afternoon, Hines won once again as she claimed the title of the sub-bantam girls 200m in a meet record time of 33.77.

It was a thrilling finish in the intermediate girls 1500m as Samantha Staples (Crystal Lake, Ill.) held off a bell-lap charge by Katia Matora (Redmond, Wash.) to pick up her second win of the championships. Staples won in 4:48.02, with Matora taking a close second in 4:48.04. Both young women bettered the previous meet record. Yesterday, Staples won the 3,000m.

Greg Moschella (Westborough, Mass.) picked up multiple wins in the youth boys division. Moschella was very consistent in the triple jump where he didn’t record a single jump of less than ten meters. His winning mark of 10.61m/34-09.75 was more than two feet farther than his nearest competitor. Moschella also won the 400m in a meet record time of 55.36.

Felicia Quainoo (Avenel, N.J.) racked up the wins in the bantam girls division. After winning the 800m yesterday, she blew away the field in the 400m where she bested second place by nearly six seconds to take the win in a meet record of 1:08.49.

It was a family affair in the shot put where Sterling Glenn and Teagun Glenn (Rio Rancho, N.M) both won their respective divisions. Sterling out threw the rest of the girls in the sub-bantam class with a best mark of 5.22m/17-01.50 coming on her last throw. Her older brother Teagun then had a monster throw of 8.08m/26-06.25. Teagun’s mark established a meet record and bettered the rest of the field by more than four feet.
