INDIANAPOLIS – Adding a new element to its partnership with USATF, The Hershey Company will be the title sponsor of the 2017 USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, USATF announced Wednesday.
Taking place July 24-30 in Lawrence, Kansas, the Junior Olympics is USATF’s largest single event, with up to 10,000 youth athletes participating each year.
Hershey and USATF announced the launch of their partnership in 2014, focused around the RunJumpThrow youth activity program and including support of USATF’s Youth Championship events. RunJumpThrow has reached over 500,000 children since its establishment in 2015. The entitlement of the 2017 Junior Olympics (JOs) will include providing enhancements to the youth athletes competing at the meet, from experiential improvements to take-home mementos.
“We are grateful to Hershey for their continued support of youth track & field on the national level,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “We look forward to an outstanding Junior Olympics experience for all of our athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.”
“Supporting the Junior Olympics is the perfect complement to our RunJumpThrow collaboration with USATF, and it’s a natural extension of our Team USA support,” said Leigh Horner, Vice President of Corporate Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility from Hershey. “We are proud to be a part of such a great opportunity for young people to get active, become engaged in the sport, and have fun.”
The USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships will be held at Rock Chalk Park, the home of Kansas Track and Field, in Lawrence, Kansas. USATF’s JO meet is one of the most visible youth athletic development programs in the world. Many of today’s Olympic stars began their track and field careers competing in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.
Nearly 10,000 athletes are expected to travel to Lawrence for the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships. Entry is based on athlete performances at Preliminary, Association and Regional levels of the 2017 USATF Junior Olympic Program. Competition takes place in six two-year age groups with athletes between the ages of 7 and 18.
