Gwen Berry breaks women’s hammer throw American record en route to USATF Athlete of the Week

5/10/2017

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gwen Berry (St. Louis, Missouri) shattered the American record in the women’s hammer throw at the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday. The 2016 Olympian’s mark of 76.77m/251-10, recorded on her opening throw, improved upon the standing record of 75.73m/248-5, set by Amanda Bingson at the 2013 USATF Outdoor Championships.

Berry now ranks in the top ten in the world this year. Rio teammate Deanna Price (Moscow Mills, Missouri) finished in second place.

Earlier this year, Berry also set a world’s best in weight throw at USATF Indoor Championships.

Other notable performances:

  • Rio Olympian Devon Allen (Phoenix, Arizona) made a healthy return to competition at the Oregon Twilight following knee surgery last year, finishing a step behind Johnathan Cabral in the 110m hurdles in 13.59.

  • 2016 Olympic gold medalist Michelle Carter (Red Oak, Texas) kicked off her outdoor season with a solid win at IAAF Diamond League in Doha, throwing 19.32m/63-4.75.

  • Keni Harrison (Clayton, North Carolina) garnered her second win in one week following Drake Relays at IAAF Diamond League in Doha. Despite breaking her hand before competition, Harrison ran unfazed with a winning 100m hurdles time of 12.59.

  • Two-time Olympic gold medalist Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Georgia) saved his best jump for last at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Doha, claiming victory against Omar Craddock with 17.25m/56-7.25.
