Team USA members Joseph Gray and Brandy Erholtz each captured the men’s and women’s individual titles, respectively, as Team USA won the women’s team title over host Canada at the North America Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Mountain Running Championships at Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver Saturday.
The ninth edition of the NACAC Mountain Running Championships, it was the fourth consecutive individual championship for Gray and the eighth team title for Team USA’s women, which also won the 2011 competition. Canada took home top honors in the men’s competition after also winning last year in Mexico.
Team USA women used help from Amber Moran, who was the second overall finisher, defending NACAC champion Maria Dalzot finishing closely behind in third and Michele Suszek was fourth for Team USA. Canada’s top scoring woman, Laura Estey, finished fourth overall.
Showing their depth, the Canadian men placed each member of its scoring team in front of the second Team USA finisher Ryan Woods, who crossed the line in fifth. Woods was followed by Jared Scott in seventh and Tommy Manning in eighth. Team Canada scored nine points to Team USA’s 13.
Mexico was expected to compete, but a delay with Visas which prevented them from traveling to Cypress Mountain.
Next year’s competition will be held in late June at Mount Cranmore in New Hampshire.
