Getting to know Team USA – Brittney Reese

Many times success in athletics is measured by consistency. Being able to perform at the most elite level demands dedication from an athlete and to remain at the very top year after year is even more difficult. Few have done it better than Brittney Reese.

While it may have gone relatively unnoticed, Reese is in the midst of streak that is almost difficult to believe.

Just how good is it?

You need to go all the way back to 2008 to find the last time Reese has lost an Olympic, World Indoor Championships or World Outdoor Championships final in the women’s long jump. That streak has included one Olympic and four world championships gold medals.

Reese will put her impressive streak on the line Sunday when it comes time for the women’s long jump final at the 14th edition of the World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Moscow, Russia.

She placed fifth at the 2008 Beijing Games before pulling off a run that included World Outdoor Championships gold in 2009 and 2011, World Indoor Championships gold in 2010 and 2012 and Olympic gold in London in 2012.

So far in 2013 Reese continues to perform at a high level and arrives in Russia with the top mark in the world this season. She faces difficult competition and specifically within Team USA with London Olympic bronze medalist Janay DeLoach Soukup looking for her first world title.

Reese’s streak has included memorable performances.

Always aggressive approaching the toe board, Reese fouled four of her six jumps in London but landed a mark at 7.12m/23-4.50 on her second attempt, which ended up winning her the competition.

In Istanbul, Turkey, at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, DeLoach Soukup stole the lead from Reese on her final jump. Undeterred, Reese not only took the lead back on her final jump to win gold, she set the American indoor record at 7.23m/23-8.75.

Another memorable performance may be required from Reese in Moscow to continue her streak.
