Future Stars and Superstars at Youth Outdoors on Saturday

6/28/2014

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana -- The USATF Youth Outdoor Championships continued Saturday, June 28 on the campus of Indiana University with a day full of great performances as Olympian Dwight Phillips joined the action, signing autographs and awarding medals.

Even with rain and lightning delays, competition continued to impress. In the 3,000 meter, showcasing four girls age groups and two boys age groups, there was a fantastic finish between 11-12 girls, Camila Vicens (Houston, Texas) and Carmen Alder (Pinehurst, North Carolina). Vicens pulled away on the last leg, finishing in 11:02.58 ahead of Alder with a time of 11:08.70.

There were some notable performances in the hurdles with Isaiah Moore (Burlington, North Carolina) taking first in preliminaries, running 14.16 in the mens 17-18 110m hurdles. With a very competitive field set for the final, tomorrow’s race looks to be one to watch.

Long jump yielded a stellar performance by Marcus Krah (Durham, North Carolina), who won with a leap of 6.71m/22-00.25ft. Krah later also qualified for second place in the 110mH.

In the field events, Laurel Bristow (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) had a great day of throwing. She took first place in the girls javelin 13-14 age group with a toss of 32.91m/108-00ft, beating her next closest competitor by 2.85m. In the first showing of hammer throw, the Carrol Pauley (Kenton, Ohio) took first place with a throw of 43.54m/142-10ft in the 15-16-year-old girls final.

Olympic legend Dwight Phillips was in attendance for today’s events. He was available for autographs and awarded medals to many of today’s winners. Phillips was the olympic gold medalist for long jump at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. He will return tomorrow as things wrap up with a full day of finals.
