Ford, Nunley complete triple victories headlining final day of USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships

7/30/2017

LAWRENCE, Kansas -- The final day of the 2017 USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships did not disappoint as fast times and photo finish sprint races made for an exciting conclusion to the seven-day event.

In total, USATF Future Stars set 16 national age group records. Watch on demand video of all competition USATF.TV+

Alexander Nunley (Garner, North Carolina; USATF North Carolina) of Run U Xpress started his day with a bang, tieing a 26-year-old national and JO record in the 13-14 boys’ 100m hurdles by crossing the line in 12.94. He returned to the track for the 100m final and claimed his second national championship with time of 11.23. To achieve his third victory, the North Carolina star stormed down the homestretch in the 200m hurdle final, stopping the clock at 24.73.

Not to be outdone, Nunley’s Run U Xpress teammate Kayla Davis (Charlotte, North Carolina; USATF North Carolina) shattered the national record in the girls’ 13-14 400m. Davis’ time of 52.54 broke Brandi Cross’ record from 2002 and is the world’s fastest ever by a 13-year-old.

Jakobe Ford (Spokane, Washington; USATF Pacific Northwest) completed an impressive and rare triple, winning three jump events. He started the meet winning the men’s 17-18 long jump at 7.47m/24-6.25 Wednesday afternoon. On Friday, Ford returned to the runway and claimed the triple jump with a mark of 15.74m/51-7.75. Finally on Sunday, the seventeen-year-old took to the high jump apron, winning with a leap of 2.15m/7-0.5. Ford is the first person to ever complete the triple in 17-18 age division history dating back to 1967.

In the men’s 17-18 division, Sean Hooper (Fort Worth, Texas; USATF Southwestern), fresh off a World Junior record in the 4x400m relay last week at the Pan American Junior Championships in Trujillo, Peru, won the open event in 45.95. ShaCarri Richardson, who also competed in Peru for Team USATF, took home the women’s 17-18 100m title in 11.58.

Capping off a tremendous week of competition, Arkansan Kennedy Lightner (Little Rock, Arkansas, USATF Arkansas) returned to the track and claimed two more wins in the 15-16 400m (47.29) and 100m (10.97) races. Earlier this week, Lightner won the 200m dash and set a meet and national age group record in the semi-finals of the 100m, clocking 10.49.

The 9-10 age division saw two national records rewritten, the first of which came during the lone distance event of the day. 10-year-old Daniel Skandera (Santa Rosa, California; USATF Pacific) took down the boys’ 1500m national record in 4:38.63 with an impressive kick to close the last 400m in 72 seconds. Skandera not only broke the previous record by over four seconds, he also did it without shoes.

The second record was set by Payton Payne (Lanham, Maryland; USATF Potomac Valley) in the girls’ 100m dash. Payne stopped the clock at 12.84, .01 under Angela Williams’ 1990 record of 12.85. Tarrianna Jackson (East Point, Georgia; USATF Georgia), who set a national record on Thursday running 26.32 in the 200m, finished second.

The ever-exciting 4x400m relays closed out the championships in fine fashion. In the 11-12 boys’ race, four teams raced to the finish with the top two finishing within .30 of one another. Valley United Track Club- A was victorious running 3:55.61 over Willis/Camden PAL - A at 3:55.91. Desoto Nitro - A and A.C.T.S. ION Track- A both also broke four minutes.
