First relay team of 90-plus-year-olds set 3 World Records, So Cal wins team championship at USATF Masters Outdoors

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- History was made, champions were crowned and more records were broken on the fourth and final day of USATF Masters Outdoor Championships at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University, on Sunday, July 20. 
 
For the first time in history, a relay team of 90-plus-year-olds took to the track. In what was the highlight of the day, perhaps even the whole meet, the five person team of Champion Goldy Sr., 97, (Haddonfield, New Jersey) Orville Rogers, 96, (Dallas, Texas) Charles Ross, 91, (Decatur, Arkansas) Charles Boyle, 91, (Annapolis, Maryland) and Roy Englert, 92, (Springfield, Virginia) competed in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800m relays. They instantly set World records with each crossing of the finish line. The team of Ross, Rogers, Englert and Goldy Sr. ran a 2:22.37 in the 4x100m. Ross, Charles, Englert and Boyle ran a 28:17.10 in the 4x800m. And in the final track event of the meet, the team of Ross, Rogers, Englert and Boyle ran a 12:41.69 in the 4x400m as the crowd rose to its feet with applause and cheers. 
 
So Cal Track Team took home their 13th team championship with 870 points. Atlanta Track Club took second with 824 and TNT International Racing finished third with 625.
 
As was the case for the whole weekend, the records fell in droves. In the women’s non-club 4x800m relay, the team of Sabra Harvey, 65, (Houston, Texas) Mary Richards, 60, (Atlanta, Georgia) Coreen Steinbach, 63, (Pompey, New York) and Kathryn Martin, 62 (Northport, New York) broke the listed World record in the 60-69 age group with a 11:06.02. They broke the previous record by sixteen seconds and the American record by over a minute. The 50-59 team of Beth Shisler, 50, (Port Matilda, Pennsylvania) Sarah Allers, 53, (Columbia, South Carolina) Claudette Groenendaal, 50, (Santa Monica, California) and Lorraine Jasper, 52, (Birchrunville, Pennsylvania) ran a 10:24.21 to beat the listed world record by almost three seconds. 
 
In the M35 club 4x400m relay, the Southwest Sprinters Track Club team of Leon Bullard, 40, (Raleigh, North Carolina) Blair DeSio, 43, (Panama City, Florida) Edward Winslow Jr., 45, (Montoursville, Pennsylvania) and Antwon Dussett, 38, (Peoria, Illinois) ran a 3:19.45 to just break the listed World record of 3:19.90.
 
The Atlanta Track Club team of Trenice Mullis Dubow, 60, (Tucker, Georgia) Nonie Hudnall, 64, (Spartanburg, South Carolina), Terry Ozell, 61, (Atlanta, Georgia) and Susan Aderhold, 66, (Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia) set the W60 record in the club 4x400m relay with a 6:12.80.
 
In the W70 shot put, Cindy Wyatt (Lewis Center, Ohio) had a phenomenal performance as she broke the listed American record of 8.47m/27-9.5 with her first throw of 8.55m/28-0.75. She bested the record with every throw before finally throwing a 8.91m/29-2.75 on her last attempt to shatter the 2009 record set by Cherrie Sherrard.
 
Florence Meiler (Shelburne, Vermont) of Mass Velocity Track Club and Irene Obera (Fremont, California) of West Valley Track Club continued their record breaking weekends in spectacular fashion. Meiler tossed 9.09m/29-10 on her third attempt in the W80 weight throw to break the listed American record of 8.51m/ 27-11. Obera broke the listed World record of 40.78 in the W80 200m by running a blistering 36.80. Both women shattered the listed World record (1:02.70) in the 200m hurdles as well, with Obera taking first with a 42.24 while Meiler finished with a 50.65.
 
Oscar Peyton, 61, (Accokeek, Maryland) of Potomac Valley Track Club, broke the listed American record in the M60 200m by .05 as he crossed the finish line in 24.32. William Jankovich, 80, (Racine, Wisconsin) ran a 41.68 to break the listed American record by over a second in the M80 200m hurdles.
