Dr. David Martin, 78, dies after long illness

Dr. David Martin, USATF marathon stalwart and dedicated researcher, died February 28 in Decatur, Georgia after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 78.

A Regents Professor Emeritus at Georgia State University's Division of Respiratory Therapy in the School of Allied Health Sciences, Martin was one of the exercise physiologists responsible for USATF’s heat-training program assisting Team USATF marathoners Deena Kastor and Meb Keflezighi on to the medal podium at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, sharing his research on ways to train and race in hot weather with Team USATF athletes’ personal coaches. His research also focused on altitude training and on the physiological effects of traveling before major competitions.
Martin was more than a scientist and physiologist. For almost two decades, he was simultaneously an active member of USATF (marathon development chair), the American Physiological Society, The Society of Olympic Historians, the Track and Field Writers of America, the Association de la Presse Sportive (AIPS), the Association of Track and Field Statisticians (chief compiler), the Association of International Marathons (chief statistician) and the International Marathon Medical Directors Association (IMMDA.)
Recognized as one of the world's leading experts in long distance running, Martin published more than 50 articles in coaching journals intended to assist coaches and athletes understand the science of human athletic performance. He has served as a personal coach/advisor to several successful distance runners, and has had five books published: The Olympic Marathon (2000), The Marathon Footrace (1979), Training Distance Runners (1991), Better Training for Distance Runners (1997) and The High Jump Book (1987).
A five-time men's senior team leader for Team USA at World Cross Country Championships, Dr. Martin last served in that capacity in 2006.
