9/30/2015

INDIANAPOLIS -- Olympic bronze medalist and masters distance athlete Deena Kastor earns USATF Athlete of the Week after a near recording-breaking performance in the 5 km at Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Kastor (Mammoth Lakes, California), who completed the 5 km in a season’s best 15:48, tied both the U.S. and World Masters record as she finished first among the women’s field and in third place overall. Kastor tied Colleen De Reuck’s time set at the 2004 Freihofer’s Run for Women 5K in Albany, New York.

Kastor is no stranger to landmark results in major road races. At the 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon Philadelphia, she set a world masters record at age 41, finishing in 1:09:36 to break her own American masters half marathon record in addition to the world mark.

  • Meb Keflezighi (Mammoth Lakes, California) set an American Masters record in the half marathon with his 63:02 finish at Rock ’n’ Roll San Jose.
  • Cerake Geberkidane(Denver, Colorado) of Oklahoma State won the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater with a 24:31.3 for 8 km. He was also a 2015 Pan Am Juniors silver medalist in the 5,000m.

Now in its 14th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
