David Angell wins USATF Masters 5K Championships en route to Athlete of the Week

Masters athlete David Angell (Blue Ridge, Virginia) claimed his third USATF Masters Championships title of 2018 at the USATF Masters 5K Championships in Atlanta, Georgia last Saturday.


Angell defeated Californian John Gardiner for the first time in four tries at a national road race championships. The 41-year-old won in 15:45, opening up a five second gap on the final hill to the finish.

 

Other notable performances:


Christian Coleman sped to victory at the Birmingham Diamond League meet, winning the men’s 100m in 9.94, just 0.001 ahead of second place.

 

Fred Kerley earned the men’s 400m win at the Birmingham Diamond League meet in 45.54 for his second DL win of the season.

 

Laurie Knowles earned her first USATF Masters Championships title on the roads, winning by over half a minute at the USATF Masters 5K Championship against a formidable field.


Rachel Schneider followed up her Falmouth Mile win (4:27.23) the very next day with another win in the Brooklyn Mile (4:49).


Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
