Coburn races into history books en route to USATF Athlete of the Week


INDIANAPOLIS -- Emma Coburn made history at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Stadium on Friday, August 11, winning her first global gold and shattering multiple records en route to USATF Athlete of the Week honors.

Coburn (Crested Butte, Colorado) set an American Record and World Championships meet record of 9:02.58 in becoming the first U.S. woman ever to win the 3000m steeplechase at a global championship. Coburn clipped five seconds off her own American record and led Team USATF in a 1-2 finish in the event over the heavily favored Kenyans and world record-holder Ruth Jebet of Bahrain.

Other notable performances:

  • Katie Burnett Set an American Record of 4:21:51 in the women’s 50K race walk to finish fourth in the inaugural staging of the event at the World Championships.
  • Phyllis Francis — Upset the two pre-race favorites to win her first major international title, running a lifetime best of 49.92 to take gold in the women’s 400m. Francis also anchored the Team USATF 4x400m relay to gold in a world-leading 3:19.02.
  • Christian Taylor — Won his fifth Olympic or World title in the men’s triple jump, beating teammate Will Claye in a back-and-forth final with a third-round leap of 17.68m/58-0.25.

Now in its 16th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
