Claye’s big jump wins him USATF Athlete of the Week

7/3/2019

Will Claye (Crestview, Arizona) moved to third on the all-time triple jump list to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Claye, a two-time Olympic silver medalist and twice a World Indoors champion, used a near-perfect hop, step and jump to cover 18.14m/59-6 at the USATF SoCal Jim Bush Track & Field Championships at Long Beach, California, making him the third-best in history and only the sixth man ever to surpass 18.00m/59-0.75. His mark has only been surpassed by world record-holder Jonathan Edwards of Great Britain and American record-holder Christian Taylor, and added more than eight inches to Claye’s lifetime best.

Full results are here.

Other notable performances from the previous week:

Taylor Ewert — In her debut at the distance, Ewert set an American U20 record of 1:38:55 for the 20K race walk at the USATF Junior 20 km Championships at Owego, New York. Her split at 15K, 1:13:50, also bettered the existing national U20 record.

Rai Benjamin — Benjamin ran the ninth-fastest time ever in the men’s 400m hurdles at the Pre Classic, clocking a world-leading 47.16. It was the No. 7 time ever by an American.

Christian Coleman — Coleman sprinted to a world-leading 9.81 in the 100m at the Pre Classic, the third Diamond League meet in a row this season that he has gone sub-9.90.

Vashti Cunningham — Cunningham became only the eighth American woman to ever high jump 2.00m/6-6.75, clearing that height to take second at the Pre Classic.

Ari Ince — Ince moved to No. 4 on the all-time U.S. list in the women’s javelin with a huge PR throw of 63.54m/208-5 at the JavFest in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

Now in its 18th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
