Christian Coleman’s historic 60m earns him USATF Athlete of the Week

1/26/2018

Christian Coleman (Atlanta Georgia) ran the fastest indoor 60 meters ever to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Coleman, the 2017 IAAF World Championships 100m and 4x100m relay silver medalist, rocketed to a 6.37 Friday at the Clemson Invitational, .02 faster than the existing world and American record, held since 1998 by Maurice Greene. The quadruple NCAA sprint champion last year ran 6.47 in the heats before his dash into the history books.

Other notable performances:
Keturah Orji — Orji bettered the U.S. indoor record in the women’s triple jump at Clemson, spanning 14.53m/47-8. Sheila Hudson set the previous American record of 14.23m/46-8.25 in 1995, while Orji had two jumps of 14.32m/46-11.75 at Nashville in 2017 that were not ratified as records.
Katelyn Tuohy — Continuing her streak of record-setting runs, Tuohy smashed the national high school indoor record in the 5,000m with a 15:37.12 at the Virginia Showcase in Lynchburg. That time also was faster than the existing prep outdoor record.
Nick Christie — Christie set a lifetime best of 4:09:32 to win the USATF men’s 50km Race Walk Championships at Santee, California.
Katie Burnett — Burnett, the American record-holder, took the USATF women’s 50km Race Walk title with a 4:47:50 at Santee.
Brian Herron — Herron, a junior at Atlanta’s Lakeside High School, set a world and American junior best and a national high school indoor record in the 300 meters at the Virginia Showcase, clocking 32.64.

Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on USATF.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2018 Winners: January 4, Brian Herron; January 11, Katelyn Tuohy; January 18, Molly Huddle; January 25, Christian Coleman.
