Carter, Wilkinson highlight champions on first day of USATF Youth Indoor Championships

LANDOVER, Md.  - Dylan Carter and Gabrielle Wilkinson won national titles in dominant fashion as more than fifty young athletes earned national titles on the first day of competition at the USATF Youth Indoor Track & Field National Championships at the Prince George’s County Sports and Learning Complex on Saturday.

Athletes qualified to compete at the third annual Youth Indoor Championships by qualifying through one of five zone championships.

Top performers of the day included:

Dylan Carter (Maryville, Tenn.) continued his domination of the boys 11-12 shot put as he won with a heave of 13.91m/45-07.75. His mark surpassed the previous meet record of 12.73 by more than a meter. Carter won the national title with more than three meters to spare over his closest competitor.

Gabrielle Wilkinson (Philadelphia, Pa.) of the Mt. Airy TC ran away from the field in the girls 13-14 800m to set an American youth age-group indoor record in 2:16.98. Wilkinson bested her closest competitors by nearly ten seconds to win the national title. Wilkinson now owns four indoor youth age-group records.

Cameren Anderson (Somerset, N.J.) of the Unity Express Track & Field Club unleashed a monstrous throw in the  8 and under boys shot put to win in 5.57m/18-03.25. Anderson’s mark was nearly five feet farther than his nearest competitor.

Brothers Jahnaul and Jahvaree Ritzie-Pouncey (Winston Salem, N.C.) of the Tri-City Relays Track Club made it a family affair as both won national titles in their respective events. Jahnaul won the 8 and under boys long jump in 3.22m/10-6.75, and Jahvaree won the 9-10 boys shot put in 8.67m/28-05.50.
