Carol Finsrud shatters world masters discus record to earn USATF Athlete of the Week


Carol Finsrud (Lockhart, Texas) broke the masters women’s 60-64 world record in the discus Saturday by five feet at the Texas vs. The World meet in San Marcos, Texas, to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Finsrud’s throw of 40.76m/133-9 broke the old world best of 39.24m/128-9, held by Karen Illgen. She also broke the existing world best for the throws pentathlon with a score of 4,727 points.

Other notable performances:

  • Katelyn Tuohy — Tuohy, a sophomore at North Rockland (New York) High School, broke the Van Cortlandt Park course record by 32 seconds, covering the 2.5 miles in 13:21 at the Hoka One One Manhattan Invitational cross country meet.

  • Elinor Purrier — New Hampshire senior Purrier clocked 19:29 for 6K to win the NCAA Division I Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, beating defending NCAA XC champion Karissa Schweizer of Missouri.

  • Kathy Martin — Running an age-graded 15:47 (21:23 actual time), the 66-year-old Martin was the fastest female finisher at the USATF Masters 5K Cross Country Championships at Boston’s Franklin Park.

  • Nat Larson — 55-year-old Larson had the fastest men’s age-graded time at the USATF Masters 5K Cross Country Championships at Boston’s Franklin Park, recording a 14:21 (16:56 actual time) to win by 16 seconds.

Now in its 16th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
