Cantwell named USATF Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Christian Cantwell has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting a world leading mark in the men’s shot put at the Gill Athletic Field Fest on Saturday, July 7th in Champaign, Ill.
Cantwell’s throw of 22.31m/73-2.5 moves him into first on the 2012 world list, ahead of USA teammate Reese Hoffa who threw 22.00m/72-2.25 at the Olympic Trials. Cantwell, a 2008 Olympic Silver medalist, bettered his throw of 21.71m/71-2.75 achieved at Kansas Relays earlier this year.
The seventh annual Field Event competition was held on the grounds of the Gill Athletics factory and featured pole vault, discus and shot put competitions. Cantwell was named the Athlete of the Meet after his outstanding performance.
Cantwell will look to carry the momentum of his win to the Olympic Games later this month, leading Team USA’s shot putters. Joining him on Team USA will be two-time Olympian Reese Hoffa and first time Olympian Ryan Whiting.
Now in its 11th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
