Brian Herron’s dash double earns him USATF Athlete of the Week


Brian Herron (Decatur, Georgia) ran the fourth-fastest high school indoor times ever in the 200m and 400m to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Herron, who ran on Team USATF’s world junior record-setting 4x400m relay at the Pan Am Juniors last summer, clocked 20.95 and 46.43 at the Hoover Alumni Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 30. His 200m time is believed to be the fastest-ever indoors by a youth athlete.

Other notable performances:

  • Molly Seidel — Overcoming frigid conditions in Central Park, Seidel won the NYRR Midnight Run in 21:24 for four miles.
  • Reid Buchanan — Buchanan also beat the freeze in Central Park, winning the men’s NYRR Midnight Run in 19:08. The temperature at the start of the race was 10F.
  • Miranda Melville — Melville won the women’s USATF Indoor 5,000m Race Walk Championship by more than two minutes at Rochester, finishing in 23:04.85.

Now in its 17th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
