2/10/2018

BOSTON -- In the final tune up before the USATF Indoor Championships, elite distance runners and sprinters hit the track Saturday at the New Balance Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College.

In the men’s 60m, one of the most anticipated events of the day, Christian Coleman did not disappoint. Easing up just before the line, Coleman finished ahead of China’s Zhenye Xie with a time of 6.46. Noah Lyles finished third, crossing the line in a personal best time of 6.57.

For a second consecutive week, Donavan Brazier narrowly missed an American record in the 800m. He defeated the field with a personal best time of 1:45.11, the third-fastest time ever by an American. Johnny Gray owns the top two U.S. 800m indoor times, with Brazier now holding the third and fourth spots.

Jenny Simpson, competing in her first track race of the 2018 season, defeated a deeply talented 3000m field with a personal best 8:40.31, making her the fifth-fastest American woman ever. World champion steeplechaser Emma Coburn placed fourth after fading late, finishing in 8:43.57.

Fellow 2017 World Championships teammate Shakima Wimbley defeated a superb 400m field with her fastest time of the season so far, crossing the line in 51.82. Phyllis Francis and Natasha Hastings finished second and third in 52.38 and 52.45, respectively.

In the 60m hurdles, Sharika Nelvis edged out Christina Manning by .007 seconds in a photo finish, with both being awarded a time of 7.89.

In the field events, Chris Carter took first in the triple jump with a leap of 16.67m/54-8.25.

Canadian Jenna Westaway took first in the 800m in personal best time of 2:01.22, with Raevyn Rogers and Charlene Lipsey finishing second and third with times of 2:01.73 and 2:02.05, respectively.
