Brannigan sets 3000m IPC world best, earns USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- Mikey Brannigan earns USATF Athlete of the Week following his record-setting performance at the Armory Track Invitational on Saturday, February 4. Brannigan shattered the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) world best for the men’s 3,000m, finishing in 8:07.64. Watch his race on USATF.TV +PLUS.

Brannigan’s time shaved nearly 40 seconds off the previous mark, set by Portugal’s Antonio Mariz in 1999 (8:44.17).

“This is great for me,” Brannigan, 20, said Saturday. “This was my first race of the indoor track season. I wanted to see what kind of shape and fitness I was in. This was very surprising. The crowds were cheering me on. ‘Let’s go, let’s go, keep it up, keep it up.’ They were cheering for me the whole way. That really helped me a lot.”

Brannigan (Northport, New York) is the reigning Paralympic Games and Parapan Games gold medalist in the men’s 1,500m, and will be competing in the Invitational Mile at the NYRR Millrose Games on Saturday on USATF.TV +PLUS.
