Barksdale takes new role at USATF

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sharrieffa Barksdale has joined the USATF staff in Indianapolis, USATF announced Monday, June 20.

Barksdale, a 1984 Olympian in the 400m hurdles, will take on the role of Manager, Alumni Relations.

Barksdale has been an active participant of the Alumni Association since 2000 and served as the Vice President before being elected as President in 2006.

“Alumni are an incredibly important part of USATF, and we considered it a key priority to develop a staff position that is devoted to them,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “Sharrieffa is an accomplished athlete with more than a decade of working directly with our alumni, both formally and informally. She will have a big impact on our programs moving forward.”

She spent the last 11 years working with the Goodwill Industries in Lexington, Kentucky, where she provided counseling and advice to assist disabled, ex-offenders and disadvantaged people as they re-enter the workforce.

Barksdale was a standout athlete at Harriman High School (Harriman, Tennessee) and the University of Tennessee. She is a 12-time collegiate All-American, and was the first collegiate woman to run the 400-meter hurdles in under 55 seconds, breaking the American record at the time. She was inducted into the University of Tennessee Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this year.

She has served on the USATF Women’s Track and Field committee, Diversity committee, Background screening committee, Law and Legislation committee, and as an AAC Liaison. She has served on several USATF international teams, providing managerial and staffing assistance, including as Pool Manager for the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships Team; Pool Manager for the 2007 IAAF World Championships Team; Pool Manager for the 2008 Olympic Team; Head Manager for the 2009 Junior Pan American Team; Pool Manager for the 2009 World Championships; Event Manager for the 2011 World Championships; 2012 Olympic Team Event Manager; and 2015 World Relays Event Manager. She will serve on the 2016 Olympic Team as an Event Manager.
