Back-to-back records fall on second day of USATF Hershey National Youth Indoor Championships

3/11/2017

STATEN ISLAND, New York - A bevy of repeat record breakers and first time champions marked the second day of competition at USATF Hershey National Youth Indoor Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. In total, 40 meet records have been shattered so far.

Nathan Cumberbatch (USATF Wisconsin; Milwaukee Mustangs) broke his own 2016 record in the boys’ 11-12 800m in 2:16.37, improving the mark by three seconds. In the girls’ 13-14, Michaela Rose (USATF Virginia; F.I.A. Ambassadors) bettered her 2016 record of 2:15.80 with a new time of 2:15.28.

In several events the record was broken multiple times in the same final, ratcheting up the competition for first place and record owner. The USATF Club 4x55m shuttle hurdle relay boys 15-18 record was bested two times following Newark Flames Track Club 'A'’s 31.34 run. Annarosa Rodriguez (USATF North Carolina) was the top finisher in the girls’ 11-12 1500m race walk, and also the third to break the record that day with her time of 7:43.57.

Tamrat Gavenas (USATF New York; Prospect Par) and Ethan Long (USATF Potomac Valley; Firebirds Athletic) both broke a six-year-old mark in the boys’ 9-10 800m, with Gavenas clinching the title in 2:27.01 in a final burst of speed to the line.

In perhaps the most impressive display of multiple athletes crushing the meet record, eight out of the top ten men’s 17-18 weight throw competitors bested the 2016 record of 19.58m. Jared Briere (USATF New England) ultimately claimed the title with a throw of 22.10m/72-06.25 after a lengthy battle against last year’s third place finisher Michael Feldman (USATF New York). Feldman held on and significantly improved upon his 17.83m throw in 2016 with a new best of 20.95m/68-09.00.

All eyes were on the fastest section of the men’s 17-18 800m when Canoy Tyree (USATF North Carolina) led a tight race for the first 600m, until Jacob Grinwis (USATF Montana; Bozeman Track) went wide and began a last-minute sprint to the front. Grinwis caught Tyree in the race’s final moments to claim the national title and break the meet record in 1:56.15.

V-Tesse Track Club 'A' closed out the day’s records with a new USATF Club 15-18G 4x200m time of  1:40.56.

The final day of competition begins at 9:00 a.m. ET with the 4x800m relays and shot put, triple jump and pole vault. Click for complete schedule here and live results here.
