American Hurdlers find success in Rome
6/1/2012
American hurdlers led the way in performance as the Samsung Diamond League made its third stop Thursday in Rome.
2008 Olympic gold medalist Dawn Harper was the sole champion for the USA taking first in the 100m hurdles in 12.66. Just one-hundredth of a second behind her was 2011 USA Outdoor champion Kellie Wells while Michelle Perry and Danielle Carruthers finished fourth and seventh in 12.78 and 12.87, respectively. After getting tripped up by the first hurdle, Lolo Jones did not finish.
Americans came home with three other runner-up finishes with American record holder Lashinda Demus in the women’s 400m hurdles (54.80), 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Bershawn Jackson in the men’s 400m hurdles (48.25) and reigning world champion Jesse Williams who tied for second in the men’s high jump (2.31m/7-7).
Other top performances came from women’s 400m hurdler T’erea Brown who placed third (54.96). Ranked #1 in the world in 2011, Morgan Uceny had a strong showing in the women’s 1500m, moving up from 11th in the field to finish fourth in 4:01.59 while 2012 World Indoor bronze medallist Michelle Carter also finished fourth in the women’s shot put (18.66m/61-2.75).
