A message from Stephanie Hightower on the passing of Kim Haines

2/11/2013

Over the weekend, this sport lost one of its most dedicated, longest-serving and selfless contributors when USATF board member Kim Haines passed away Saturday night after an illness.

Kim had been involved in USATF for longer than most of our members have been alive. He was a retired teacher, principal, athletic director, coach and military veteran with two master’s degrees and his USATF Master track official certification.

Kim’s work with USATF touched tens of thousands of people – particularly youth. Years ago, he was the National Youth Committee chairman and in that capacity served on our board. Although he was a past president of the Montana Association, his focus was always getting young people engaged in our sport. Kim organized and accompanied USATF youth teams to their first international competitions and was always looking for ways to make the youth experience more meaningful.

After a decade away from national involvement in USATF, Kim rejoined our board in 2009 at a pivotal time for USA Track & Field. He was more passionate than ever about USATF and what we have been trying to accomplish with our new board and new leadership. Since rejoining the board, Kim never missed a meeting, either in person or on the phone. In fact, he was on our last board call, January 16, despite being ill.

But always, Kim’s focus was his beloved youth programs. He often would talk about the importance of the “little things” for our youth programs, such as the All American hats from Nike that we gave out to the top eight finishers one year. Kim kept one of the hats with him almost constantly and referred to it as something that really made our meet special for the kids and their families.

Thanks to Kim’s efforts, kids all over the country, as well as in his home state of Montana, had a special experience in this sport. He is a member of the Northern Montana State University Hall of Fame and the Montana Coaches Hall of Fame and is a past recipient of the Frank Sevigne Award and a USATF President’s Award. Thanks to him, all of his colleagues on our board shared in that special experience.

We will share any information we receive regarding arrangements.
