A letter from the President

6/24/2017

USATF Family,

As summer beings, we find ourselves on the verge of another championship season, beginning with this week's USATF Outdoor Championships and Junior Championships in Sacramento. Our outstanding athletes and coaches at all levels have been hard at work to deliver awe-inspiring performances that keep us on the edge of our seats.

USATF's Youth and athletes should be very excited as their own championships ramp up. The USATF National Youth Outdoor Championships this month in Lisle, Illinois, and the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Championships next month in Lawrence, Kansas, provide our youngsters with world-class events to showcase their hard work and determination. Our Masters athletes likewise continue to prove that our sport is timeless and all-inclusive. Help celebrate the 50th annual USATF Masters Championship this July in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by lacing up or cheering on a friend.

Our elite athletes will cap off our championship season as they look to demonstrate why Team USATF is the World's #1 Track & Field Team at the IAAF World Championships in London.

As USATF President, I have continued to watch, listen and learn from our constituents in all areas of the sport. I greatly enjoyed attending my first Mountain Trail Championships earlier this month. Even though I have been in the distance running space for 40 years, it was refreshing and inspiring to see so many dedicated athletes in this unique and very successful segment of running.

The USATF Presidential Listening Tours are now being scheduled for the months ahead. The next tour stop will be with the Missouri Valley Association on July 26, held in conjunction with the USATF Junior Olympics. I look forward to the Colorado Association sharing their insights on September 10 as part of their association's annual meeting, followed by a stop to visit the Georgia Association on September 16. More tour stops are being planned for September with the Potomac Valley, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida Associations.

Our events, from championship meets to listening tour meetings, are not possible without the teams of "volunteers," the many committee members and our dedicated officials who are critical to the success of conducting them. From everyone at USATF, we send out a sincere Thank You to the local organizing committees for delivering these opportunities. I cannot say enough about our 6,500 certified officials who ensure our meets are fair and safe. Collaborating with the National Office, we all are doing everything we can to make our meets the best they can be for our athletes and fans.

Good luck to all our incredible athletes! And I extend a special shout-out to our very talented professional coaches, who are at the heart of developing Team USATF as we strive to win medals and perform brilliantly each year, and at every Olympic Games and World Championships.

I look forward to seeing you trackside this summer! As always, feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Sincerely,

VinLan
